We want you to be safe!
Longboarding is a great way to have fun and get some exercise. It’s easy to learn but also presents some real dangers. It involves moving at very high speeds down steep hills past other longboarders, as well as natural and man-made obstacles. Falls, some of the spectacular variety, are going to happen, regardless of how good of a longboarder you are. Follow this safety tips to learn how to stay safe on your board.
- Have a safety mindset.
- Wear protective gear. Always wear a helmet, knee pads, elbow pats, wrist guards and appropriate shoes every time you ride. The helmet should fit properly (snug but not too tight) and have a chin strap (that you use). Make sure your helmet meets the standards set by ASTM, CPSC, or EN 1078. Empty your pockets of all hard or sharp objects.
- Give your board a safety check each time before you ride and make sure everything is put together right. Check deck, trucks and wheels for wear and tear. Check all nuts and bolts to make sure they are tight. Check your kingpin to make sure it is in good condition. Check you Kingpin Cap to make sure it is in place and flat head screws are tight.
- Warm up before you go. Have a stretch, do yoga, practice your balance, and be aware before getting on your longboard.
- Master the basics first. Learn turning and slowing techniques and how to stop properly before attempting more difficult maneuvers. Learn to fall (practice falling on a soft surface) on the fleshy parts of your body rather than your arms. If you know you're going to fall, crouch down so you won't have as far to fall. Try to relax and roll if you fall.
- Know the route you’re considering to ride and observe traffic. Screen the area where you will be riding for holes, bumps, rocks, glass or other debris. Do not ride on the street.
- Never hold onto a moving vehicle while riding a longboard. If you longboard on the sidewalk and in crowds be considerate of others.
- Know your limits. Learn to longboard smoothly and in control. Stop before you become fatigued and, most of all, have fun!
- Know what to do in an emergency. Longboarding accidents can happen. Don’t panic. Call for medical assistance or an ambulance.
